Nine Emperor Gods Festival 1: Inviting the Gods

Nine Emperor Gods Festival 1: Inviting the Gods by Hougang Dou Mu Gong 后港斗母宫, Singapore

The Nine Emperor Gods festival is one of the lesser known gems of Singapore. On the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, each of the Nine emperor Gods temples makes a Yew Keng procession to the river where a Taoist priests invites the gods. They are then carried in palanquins back to the temple. There are many stories associated with the identity of the Nine Emperor Gods, the celestial variety identifying them with the 7 stars of the Big Dipper and 2 invisible stars, and others with 9 explorers who helped establish Chinese communities on the Malay Peninsula.

It was my second night in Singapore, and a great way to start my research.

Bro, above statement is wrong, inviting of "water" is before the start of the 1st of lunar sept, on the 9th of lunar sept is the send off.

  2. Many thanks for that ... I will have to recheck my data ....

So, what is the ritual for that I saw on the 9th day by the river? The people there said it was to invite the gods, but I didn't ask the Taoist priest as I should have done ....

  3. It appeared real. I have chosen to accept everything as 'real' until proven otherwise. As we have agreed before, anything is possible. "In an infinite universe, everything, no matter how imporbble, must exist at some time and some place". Wish I could remember who wrote that - read it in a science fiction or fantasy fiction book ... could have been in http://www.amazon.com/Magician-Apprentice-Riftwar-Saga-1/dp/0553267604/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1287557309&sr=8-2

Of course, other explanations could be that the participants thought it was real so they subconsciously swung the palanquin harder, or, they swung the palanquin harder because that is what you are supposed to do, and you wouldn't want to let down the team, or even, they think the god might be real, so better swing it for all you are worth just incase you piss him off .... all possibilities ...

Was exciting to be there for sure....

  5. Dear Taoist bro & sis,

Javewu, the so called Long Shan Men "priest" cheated on somebody in the disgraced the reputation of Taoism. He was sentenced to 3 months jail but he tell everyone that he went "retreat". I am writing in to inform you not to be cheated by a disgraceful fake "taoist priest" like him.

Any of you if have sintua friends who are in jail recently, you can verify with them if Javewu was in jail. As a dignified taoist, we should not lie and Javewu by not admiting he was sentenced to Jail for conning people automatically discharges him as a taoist priest.

Please inform the people around you not to be cheated and consult a proper taoist priest for guidance.

Please share the msg around for the goodwill of fellow taoist bros & sis out there and beware if Javewu.
